Where the data comes from
We use the free HN Algolia API to search comments containing youtube.com and youtu.be links, extract video IDs, and deduplicate by comment ID. YouTube oEmbed supplies titles, creator names, and thumbnails. We do not download or rehost videos.
A “mention” is a distinct comment in our collected sample linking to a video. It is not a view, an upvote, or an all-time Hacker News ranking. Topics are organized using keyword matching and may overlap or be imperfect. A citation does not necessarily imply a recommendation or endorsement.
2026-11-02 · 227 distinct videos · 10 topics
Collection scope and processing notes:
Independent, non-exhaustive HN Algolia comment sample: 60 topic/domain queries, first 300 relevance-ranked comments per query, deduplicated by comment ID. Mentions count distinct sampled comments linking to each video across all queries, not views, votes or all-time HN totals. Titles are checked against transparent topic keywords and reviewed exclusions; candidates without matching topic context are not exhaustively inspected. Videos can belong to multiple topics. Official YouTube oEmbed supplies title, author and thumbnail URL. A successful oEmbed response does not guarantee playback in every region or account.
Available metadata does not guarantee playback in every region. The platform may restrict or remove a video at any time; the official player is authoritative. Videos found unavailable or disallowed for embedding during refresh are excluded.
Frequently asked questions
Is hackertube.cc the official HackerTube site?
No. This is an independent, unofficial companion guide. It is not affiliated with hackertube.org or Andrej Karpathy. The original site is https://hackertube.org.
What is HackerTube?
HackerTube is a video discovery site launched by Andrej Karpathy. His October 31, 2026 introduction describes 6,454 videos recommended on Hacker News across 150 topics. Those figures describe the original site, not this catalog.
Where do these videos and titles come from?
Video links come from public comments found through the HN Algolia API. Titles, creator names, and thumbnails come from YouTube oEmbed metadata. Each video links to its HN source.
Are mention counts an all-time ranking?
No. A mention is a distinct comment in our collected sample linking to a video. Counts do not represent views, endorsements, or an all-time ranking of all Hacker News comments.
Do I have to pay to watch?
This site charges no viewing fee. Videos use the official YouTube privacy-enhanced player, retaining platform controls, branding, advertising, and playback restrictions.
Why might a video fail to play?
A video may have been removed, made private, disallowed for embedding, or restricted by age or region. Available metadata does not guarantee playback everywhere. Check the original link; items found unavailable or disallowed during refresh are excluded.
Does this site download or rehost videos?
No. We store source links and public metadata, then load an official youtube-nocookie.com iframe. We do not download or rehost videos or modify the player.
